Feeling the heat? Here are our favorite ways to cool off in the shenandoah valley

Summer in the Shenandoah Valley is pretty hard to beat. Long days, mountain views, outdoor adventures... what's not to love?

Well... maybe the heat.

When the temperatures start climbing, don't head for the nearest air conditioner just yet. From underground adventures to sweet treats, here are some of our favorite ways to cool off while making the most of your Shenandoah Valley summer.

Explore Melrose Caverns

Okay, we might be a little biased, but hear us out.

Melrose Caverns stays a cool 55° year-round, making it the perfect escape from those hot Virginia afternoons. Join a guided tour to explore incredible limestone formations, discover fun cave features like shields and soda straws, and see more than 150 Civil War signatures and drawings still preserved on the cave walls.

It's part natural wonder, part history lesson, and all naturally air-conditioned.

Make a Splash

If you're looking to cool off in the water, the Shenandoah Valley has plenty of ways to beat the heat. Float down the Shenandoah River on a tube, hop in a kayak or canoe, make a splash at Massanutten WaterPark, or spend the afternoon at Westover Community Pool.

Just don't forget the sunscreen.

Brush up on your History

Need another break from the sun? The Valley is home to some incredible museums where you can stay cool while learning something new.

Dive into Civil War history, explore local art and culture at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, or discover stories that helped shape the Shenandoah Valley at the Rocktown History Museum. Whether you're a history buff or just looking for an afternoon adventure, these spots are well worth adding to your itinerary.

Treat Yourself

Let's be honest—no summer adventure is complete without ice cream.

Whether you're craving a classic cone, authentic gelato, or a thick milkshake, you'll find plenty of local favorites around the Valley. Stop by Smiley's Ice Cream in Bridgewater for farm-fresh weekly specials, treat yourself to handcrafted gelato at The Split Banana in Staunton, or keep it classic with a scoop (or two) of frozen custard from Kline's Dairy Bar.

It's the perfect excuse to slow down, cool off, and enjoy a sweet treat before heading to your next stop.

Try Something a Little Different

Not every summer adventure has to involve hiking boots or a swimsuit. If you're up for something beyond the usual summer activities, the Shenandoah Valley has plenty of unique experiences to choose from.

Hop aboard the Virginia Scenic Railway for a relaxing ride through the Valley, or catch a live performance at the American Shakespeare Center. They're both great ways to escape the midday heat while making memories you won't find just anywhere.
